The Tamarillo is a small tree or shrub native to the Andean region. It is cultivated on subtropical areas. The fruit has an egg shape form that is between the 2 and 4 inches long. (4 to 10cm) Their color varies from yellow and orange to red and almost purple. The flesh of the fruit has firm texture with a bittersweet taste.

It is low in calories (only about 40 calories per fruit) and very rich in vitamins A, B, C and K and large quantities of iron, calcium and magnesium. The great antioxidant properties of the fruit seem to improve the immune system.
